When the flow of oil stopped: The Special Period in Cuba

The impacts of a sudden and massive cut in oil and energy supply is a situation that could eventually become a flash forward for developed countries. For Cuba the cut happened suddenly. While it will be for different reasons and from different causes, the end of the supply of oil is on the horizon. Countries can plan for the future.

The crisis hit all sectors of Cuban society. Although the oil dependent industrial model collapsed, the government chose to maintain all social achievements, especially in the areas of education, social security and health. During the deepest moments of the crisis the government decided to "go green".

In 2005, SofoNic has started a dual education program for masons in Nicaragua, using its house-building programs as a base. Teaming up with the local technical school in Jinotepe they are graduating about ten masons every year since. Most f them have found jobs in construction or have started a business on their own. SofoNic has contracted several of them as master masons in the reconstruction programs in Haiti.
