Dubai award: Waste to Houses in final selection

The CIDEM From Waste to Houses project is among 40 finalists for the UN-Habitat Award sponsored by the City of Dubai. It brings together ecologically viable building materials and house improvement in hurricane prone areas. The technologies used are mainly from a CIDEM applied research program and include alternative cement made with recycled wastes from the sugar industry. The initiative, supported by Werkhof Darmstadt-EU, sought new paradigms to increase the availability of materials in the local market to enable house renovation after the frequent hurricanes.

Optimizing aggregates for MCR in Cameroon

Savings can be achieved in MCR production by optimizing the use of aggregates. Engineer Ndigui Billon, from the university institute MIPROMALO in Cameroon, has analyzed the different natural sands of his country and has encountered a formula to achieve a 30% savings in materials. He based his investigations on various publications, particularly the EcoSouth Technical Sheet: Designing effective sand a mortar mixes for MCR roof tiles. EcoSouth case study in Barcelona

A workshop within the framework of the World Urban Forum is being organized by t he Intermediate Technology Development Group (ITDG), together with the UN-Habitat Best Practice and Local Leadership Program (BLP), and BASIN partners. The workshop Building bridges with the grassroots will focus upon how the many examples of good practice in human settlement can be scaled up and will bring together 30 to 40 participants to discuss a briefing paper and a series of case studies. EcoSouth will present a case study about the dissemination of MCR in Latin America.

Masonry Course

Within a Sofonic program with the Polytechnic Institute of Jinotepe, apprentices participated in an intensive course in June. In addition to practical aspects, there was a visit to the ecomaterials factory, a reunion with the parents and a bricklaying contest. The course motivated the future masons and emphasized that they are creating a fundamental base for their future. During a visit to the construction site, it was evident that the apprentices were doing good work.

The city of Loja in southern Ecuador is famous for its waste recycling program and they proudly call themselves ecological city. The first impression of Loja is its cleanliness, the streets are clean and not even in the surroundings of the market waste is found. The concept of waste separation begins at home with educational programs, but there are also inspectors, which fine the violators. The article relates a visit to one of the storage centers for biological waste.

The effect of a book

The community of El Yanque, in northern Nicaragua was animated to build a brick vault roof on to their kindergarten after reading the book Un Techo Como un Arco Iris. It is a dynamic community concerned with its future, and doing its best to provide their children with a better life. The anecdotes of the book were respected, and the community insisted in adhering to the structural parts mentioned in the book.
