Ecologically and economically sustainable brick production in Chambo, Ecuador
This paper reports on successful ways of improving the economical and ecological performance of artisan workshops, based on three decades of applied investigation in several countries of Latin America and lessons learned from other continents.
The specific results reported were achieved in Chambo, Ecuador, a small town famous for its brick production, in a project jointly financed by the “Werkhof Darmstadt e.V.” and the European Union. The project was implemented by the NGO “Red EcoSur” in close cooperation with other members of the EcoSur network, mainly “Sofonic” (Nicaragua), “Grupo Sofonias” (Switzerland) and “CIDEM” (Cuba).
It presents practical proposals for improving existing brick productions and offers multidisciplinary paths to make the brickyard less damaging to the environment, reduce health hazards for the workers and more profitable.
